Requirements -

Students are generally required to have 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 Scale with most applicants having a GPA above 3.5. 

All foreign students must take the GRE (Graduate Records Exam) General Test and an English Proficiency Exam, usually TOEFL, if English is not their native tongue.

Our most competitive applicants have a GPA of 3.6/4.0, 88/100 or First Class with Honor or Distinction, and GRE scores of Verbal = 560 (75%), Quantitative = 730 (75%), and Analytical Writing = 4.0.  The minimum TOEFL scores required are TOEFL = 240 (computer based) or 600 (written based test) and TWE = 4.0, or 100 (iBT = Internet based TOEFL)

In general, we usually only admit students into our Ph.D-degree program. We do not offer funding to Master's degree students. We do offer funding to our Ph.D. students. This includes full payment of tuition and research costs, 80% of health insurance premiums, and a competitive monthly stipend.

How To Apply - To apply for Autumn 2008, for international students, we encourage completion of applications by November 30, 2007. For domestic students, we encourage completion of appliations by January 15, 2008. The following items are required before an application may be reviewed for decision by the Chemical Engineering Graduate Studies Committee.

Please submit the following items to the Admissions Office:

• Application Form:
  Online Application (opens new window) Requires a credit card for the application fee.
  
• Application Fee: $40 for domestic applicants, $50(USD) for international applicants. This fee cannot be waived.
• Official Transcripts: required from all post-secondary institutions you have attended or are now attending. Request for Official Transcript Form (opens new window) (PDF). Note: two copies of each official transcript are required, one is to be sent to the Graduate Admissions Office, the other copy is to be sent to Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.
• Official GRE scores: required for all international applicants, domestic applicants with a cumulative GPA below 3.0/4.0 and all appliants who wish to be considered for a Fellowship. We no longer accept the "old GRE" scores. All applicants must submit scores with the new Analytical Writing score. Please request ETS to send your scores to the Ohio State University Admissions Office, institution code 1592. No department code is needed.
• Official TOEFL scores: required for all applicants whose native language is not English. Please request ETS to send your scores to the Ohio State University Admissions Office, institution code 1592. No department code is needed. We will accept iBT (Internet based TOEFL), CBT (Computer based TOEFL), PBT (Paper based TOEFL). We also accept the MELAB and IELTS.
   

 Please Submit the following items to the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

• Three (3) Letters of Recommendation: Please include the Reference Form (opens new window) (PDF) that is sent with the Graduate Application packet. Recommendations MUST be on official letterhead, signed by the reference, and arrive sealed in its own envelope.
  
• Statement of Purpose: outlining your motivation for attending our program and your goals after receiving the degree. This essay allows you to express your interest in chemical engineering, describe what area(s) interest you the most, and goals that you have for applying the training received here. Since most of the material supplied with the application is little more than numbers, data, and grades, this statement allows you to "speak" to the faculty reviewing your file and gives them a glimpse into your motivations. The statement should be about one to two pages, though there is no set minimum or maximum length. Please be sure to include your full name on this document.
  
• Official Transcripts: required from all post-secondary institutions you have attended or are now attending. Request for Official Transcript Form (opens new window) (PDF). • Curriculum Vitae/Resume: No longer than two pages long.
