  • Thermodynamics: ChBE 509
  • Transport Phenomena (Momentum and Mass Transfers): ChBE 520, ChBE 522
  • Chemical Reaction Kinetics: ChBE 610

15. Can you give me a preliminary assessment of my credentials?

An applicant’s file cannot be reviewed for either admission or for qualification for financial aid until that file is complete, including official GRE scores. It is impossible to predict an applicant’s chances for admission until the whole file is reviewed and it can be determined how competitive that student’s file is with the other applicants.
For international students the TWE must be submitted as part of your application. Since the focus of this department is training research scientists at the Ph.D-degree level, the Committee will look for research experience as well as didactic course work--presentations and/or publications are also a plus. Also, the Committee reviews all official academic transcripts, statement of purpose, and letters of reference. In terms of examination scores, the Department rarely accepts a student with a GRE of less than 1750. The minimum English scores for international students are a TOEFL of 550 and a TSE of 3.5. The average scores of the 35 international students who were successful applicants during the last four years were a GRE of 1343 (Verbal 612, Quantitative 731) and Analytical 4.0, a TOEFL of 644, and a TWE of 5.5. Each year we get some about 300 applications for about 20 available graduate student positions.
