4. What types of financial
aid are available and how do I apply for them?

Another type of financial aid is a University
Fellowship (UF) award. To be considered for this,
all of your application materials must be in by
January 15 of the preceding academic year and you
must check all options box on the application

degree, but not in chemical engineering. Can I
apply directly to the Ph.D. program?
Yes you may apply, but you will probably need to take make-up course work. In order for these students to do well in all the graduate core courses, a student entering the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering graduate program must take the following undergraduate courses or have equivalent coursework in these subject areas:
- Thermodynamics: ChBE 509
- Transport Phenomena (Momentum and Mass Transfers): ChBE 520, ChBE 522
- Chemical Reaction Kinetics: ChBE 610
- Engineering Mathematics (Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations): Math 255 or 415 or equivalent

15. Can you give me a
preliminary assessment of my credentials?
An applicant’s file cannot be reviewed for
either admission or for qualification for
financial aid until that file is complete,
including official GRE scores. It is impossible to
predict an applicant’s chances for admission
until the whole file is reviewed and it can be
determined how competitive that student’s file
is with the other applicants.
For international students the TWE must be
submitted as part of your application. Since the
focus of this department is training research
scientists at the Ph.D-degree level, the Committee
will look for research experience as well as
didactic course work--presentations and/or
publications are also a plus. Also, the Committee
reviews all official academic transcripts,
statement of purpose, and letters of reference. In
terms of examination scores, the Department rarely
accepts a student with a GRE of less than 1750.
The minimum English scores for international
students are a TOEFL of 550 and a TSE of 3.5. The
average scores of the 35 international students
who were successful applicants during the last
four years were a GRE of 1343 (Verbal 612,
Quantitative 731) and Analytical 4.0, a TOEFL of
644, and a TWE of 5.5. Each year we get some about
300 applications for about 20 available graduate
student positions.

17. Can
I defer my admission to another quarter if I’m
accepted but can’t attend? What if I’m not
accepted, can I still defer my application?

Ohio State in the quarter for which you were
admitted.
However, you CANNOT update your application to
another quarter if you are not admitted. You must reapply and pay the application fee again.
