Co-op Versus Internship - What's the Difference?

A co-op experience provides the opportunity to apply what is learned in the classroom in career-related positions by alternating quarters of full-time coursework with periods of paid, full-time employment. This work arrangement will vary by employer, and it is important to understand the employer's expectation before accepting a position. Students should meet with Brian Endres or Holly Prouty to evaluate different co-op arrangements before interviewing because many employers hire for specific "rotations".

Internship involves one work period with an employer. A work period may last for one quarter or for two consecutive quarters. Summer internships are the most popular among students and employers; however, some employers offer internships in autumn, winter, or spring quarters as well.

Eligibility & Registration

Engineering students are eligible for initial registration with the Co-op & Internship Program when all of the following criteria are met:

• Enrolled in The Ohio State University College of Engineering.
• Successful completion of three full-time quarters (2 consecutive at The Ohio State University.) *
• Full-time student in good standing
• Coursework requirements: “C” or better in Math 151 or higher
• Students who do not meet these requirements precisely may request an exception by completing a “Petition Form” and obtaining the approval of ECIP Director. A meeting may be required.

* For honors students, successful completion of only two full-time quarters of study with a minimum of one having been completed at The Ohio State University is required

If you are planning to seek a co-op or internship, the first thing you will need to do is attend a Registration Workshop to learn how to use the ECIP system. Attending a Registration Workshop is the only way to register with the Engineering Co-op & Internship Program (ECIP). Registration Workshops are usually held the first 3 and last 2 weeks of every quarter. Don't miss opportunities -- it is best to attend a session held the quarter BEFORE you plan to begin your job search.

see: current schedule of registration sessions

If you've already attended a Registration Workshop and had a resume review...simply update your online registration information and update/re-upload your resume. Then submit the Quarterly Activation Form which can be found at the bottom of each screen within the online job search system.

What it's really like...

After a student has completed a coop rotation or internship, he or she has the opportunity to write about their experience in order to become eligible for a scholarship (ChBE 489).  The links below allow you to read some of those reports to get a better idea of what an internship is really like from a student's perspective:
