office hours?

I need a transcript for an employer or scholarship.  Where can I find one?

If you need an official transcript you have to request one from Buckeyelink: http://buckeyelink.osu.edu/advising_degree.html.  You can also download an unofficial transcript from this webpage by saving your "Advising Report."

I received an email from the registrar with my scheduling date.   However, I’m an honors student and my window is a lot later than all the other honors students?  What happened?

Sometimes when a student changes from another college into engineering (at any point – even before their first quarter!!) there is a limit set on their honors status.  In many cases this is simply a mistake that can be fixed.  If you think your scheduling window is opening to late and you have above a 3.4 GPA, contact the undergraduate advisor as soon as possible to inquire about fixing the scheduling date.

It’s past the 7th Friday of the quarter and I need to drop a course.  What do I do?

You must complete a packet of paperwork to petition a committee in the college of engineering.  Please see the undergraduate as soon as possible to get the packet and checklist of information that you will need.

Please keep in mind that the committee will only allow late drops for students with extenuating circumstances (i.e. documented illness right before or after the 7th Friday, death in the family, etc.). Reasons such as "I forgot", "I didn't know when the deadline was", or even "I didn't get my midterm back until after the 7th Friday" are NOT considered extenuating circumstances to the committee.

What effect does a “W” have on my transcript?

The 'W' simply means that you withdrew from the course, nothing more - nothing less, and is not used when calculating your GPA.  Failing a course is much worse than getting a 'W'. If you fail a course, you will not only receive an 'E', it will also be used in calculating your GPA which results in the lowering of both your quarter and overall GPA.   In addition, you will still have to retake the course (if it’s a required course), but now you will have to receive an 'A' or 'B' in it to offset the 'E' you got in it the first time, which wouldn't have been the case if you had dropped it.

I received a letter in the mail stating that I’m on special action probation (SAP) with the department.  Why did this happen? [pdf]

I have been dismissed from the program but I really want to do Chemical Engineering.  What is my best plan of action?

All students who are departmentally dismissed are sent to the re-exploring program in the College of Engineering.  They must wait three quarters before applying for reinstatement to the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering department.  During that time you should be focusing on getting your GPA up and successfully completing requirements towards your degree.   All students must complete a reinstatement petition – use this document to show us how your circumstances have changed to that of a successful student!

I want to take summer courses at another institution.  What steps will I have to take?

Most schools require that a student complete a transient student form to register for summer courses as a non-degree seeking student.  Contact each individual school to see what paperwork needs to be submitted.

It’s very important that you make sure the course you take will transfer back to OSU the way you expect. The best way to find out for sure how credit will transfer from another institution is to have it evaluated here at Ohio State in the department before you take the class.

However, there are a number of courses that generally will transfer. The Course Applicability System (CAS), which can be utilized through the registrar’s website, provides information on courses, course equivalencies, and program requirements at a CAS institution to anyone who accesses a CAS website. CAS provides information on how their specific coursework will transfer and apply towards a degree at a CAS institution.

After you have taken the courses at the other institution, be sure to have your transcript sent back to Ohio State admissions so the coursework can be officially applied to your record.  You must earn a C- or better in all coursework to have it transfer back.

How does Freshman Forgiveness work?

If you receive a D+, D, or E in a course within the first 45 credit hours that you earn (EM credit from AP or Department Exams does not count towards the 45 hours; however all K credit earned does count towards the 45 hours), you may re-take that course to replace that grade; although the original grade remains on your transcript, it is not used to calculate your GPA. You must re-take the course within your first 90 hours for it to replace the previous grade, and be considered Freshman Forgiveness. If you re-take the class after your first 90 credit hours then it will NOT replace the grade!   You can only use Freshman Forgiveness on up to 15 hours.

I was on a waitlist for a course and got added in but wasn’t aware that the course got added to my schedule.  I haven’t been attending the course and its past the third Friday of the quarter.  What can I do to get the course off my schedule without getting a “W”?

If this is the case, contact Mary immediately.  The instructor in the course will have some paperwork to complete as to your not attending the class.  In most cases the situation is easily resolved if you contact Mary soon enough.  In all cases, if you waitlist a course, be sure to check your schedule up to the first Friday of any quarter to see if you got added in.

What if I'm thinking Engineering is not the right major?

There are three possible means to help you determine the academic major which you closely matches your own personal interests:

1. Use the self-directed computer program FOCUS, in the College of   Engineering main office, 122 Hitchcock. Call 292-6651 for more information about the program, or to make an appointment to use the system to help you get on the right career path!

2. Make an appointment to meet with a Career Counselor in the Younkin Success Center, http://all.successcenter.ohio-state.edu/

3. Make an appointment with an advisor from the Exploration Program (Denny Hall, 292-0646)  Read more at: http://exploration.osu.edu/contact/index.cfm

I want to change my major/AOI.  Where should I start?

The first thing you want to do is set up an appointment with an advisor in the department where you wish to move.  Check out the department webpage on the OSU homepage and find contact information.  Meet with the advisor and they will assist you with any paperwork.

Coursework & Scheduling

This spring I took ChBE 201 and 420 concurrently.  I passed ChBE 420 but failed or dropped ChBE 201.  Can I take any of the junior level courses?

The general rule is that you will NOT be permitted to take ANY of the junior level courses since 201 is a pre-requisite for both 508 and 521. (Students should note that although 420 is the only pre-requisite listed for 521, 201 is a pre-req/concurrent requirement for 420 itself, so all students entering 521 must first pass both 201 and 420.) Exceptions to this policy will be considered on a case-on-case basis. If you find yourself in this situation you should come see the undergraduate advisor immediately to plan out your coursework for the next year.  In many cases there are a number of courses that students still need to take, including GECs or other requirements.  Other options include pursuing a coop or internship.

This spring I am a junior but I dropped ChBE 610 or ChBE 523.  What courses from the senior year can I take? (note – this also applies to students who want to co-op spring of the junior year)

You must complete ChBE 610 and ChBE 523 before completing Unit Ops lab or any of the senior year coursework.  If you fail either of the course or drop either or both of the courses you will NOT be permitted to continue to the senior level coursework.  There has never been an exception to this rule in the department.

I’m going to be a senior next year, but will not be taking Unit Ops this summer.  I tried to schedule the required senior courses, but cannot because Unit Ops is a pre-requisite.  What do I do?

Send the undergraduate advisor an email outlining the case and she will add the courses for you.

I’m a senior who has to take ChBE 762 this spring.  However, the lab times listed for 762 conflict with other courses that I need to take to graduate.  What can I do?

This is a common problem to the length of the lab hours for ChBE 762 and there is a solution.  Students can submit a request to John Corn (corn@chbmeng.ohio-state.edu) stating their conflict with the lab time ONLY.  Students will NOT be permitted to miss the one hour weekly lecture. Once the request is approved, Mr. Corn will email the undergraduate advisor and she will add the course to your schedule.

Please note that this is NOT a guarantee.  If there is another section of the course that does not conflict with lab time you should register for that section and avoid all possible conflicts.  However, in the case of technical electives, this is often impossible so the request is necessary.

I have credit for Chemistry 231.  Can I enroll in Chemistry 252?

No.  Students must complete Chemistry 251 to take Chemistry 252.  If you complete Chemistry 231 you will have a good foundation and understanding of basic organic chemistry concepts but you will not have enough detail to move on in the series without completing Chemistry 251.

What’s the difference between Chemistry 122 and Chemistry 122C?

Both Chem 122 and 122C use the same book and cover the same material, both have three hours of lecture and one three-hour lab each week.

The basic difference is that Chem 122 has a recitation and Chem 122C does not.

Your Chem 121 recitations have involved small group activities and you get a take-home quiz.  The Chem 122 recitation would be a little different - you can ask questions about lecture material or homework problems, and that is normally where you take your weekly quiz rather than having a take-home quiz.  Chem 122C on the other hand does NOT have recitation at all, so these students take their quiz on-line each week.

Students in both 122 and 122C have access to their lecturer's office hours and the help offered by the TA's in Room 160 Celeste.

Exams are written by the individual lecturers, but will be standard multiple choice exams given in the evening, for both 122 and 122C.

NOTE:  Chemistry 122C is not being offered as of Winter 2008.

I’m trying to add a course for the General Business Minor but am having trouble with the pre-requisites.  What should I do?

Email the undergraduate advisor and let her know the course number and the call number of the class you are trying to schedule.  Since the business courses have more pre-requisites than the system can handle, chances are you will run into problems scheduling the courses.  Be sure to contact the undergraduate advisor as soon as possible because the courses fill up very fast.

I fit into a section of a course that I need for the upcoming quarter but I would rather have another section.  Can the undergraduate advisor waitlist the section I want?

No, the undergraduate advisor cannot waitlist you for a course in which any section of that course fits into your schedule.  The general rule of thumb is that you should take the section that is open and fits into your schedule, even if that means taking the course at a less than ideal time or not with your friends.  This is especially true in cases of core or pre-requisite requirements.  You should not count on getting into a section off the waitlist, thus take advantage of an open section.

If you absolutely can’t take the course at the time that it is open due to your work schedule or other fixed commitment, schedule “FREE TIME” during that time that you are unavailable and then you will be able to waitlist the course.

I need one or two hours to be full time.  What are my options?

If you are a freshman and its winter or spring quarters, try out a freshman seminar.  These are truly discussion-only courses that meet once a week and cover a huge variety of courses.  For a full listing, see: http://freshmanseminars.osu.edu/seminar_list.html

There are several options in the college of engineering:

ENGINEER 695 – Teamwork Seminar (1 hour, graded S/U): Interactive training seminar that teaches communications and interpersonal skills vital to success as an engineer in industry. Sponsored by Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society.  This course is offered in the winter quarter and is completed the first weekend of the quarter.

Financial Aid

I can’t get a hold of anyone in the financial aid office and every time I go to Lincoln Tower there is a mile long wait.  Is there anyone specific I can contact?

Every Tuesday of every quarter a representative from financial aid is available to speak with engineering students in 122 Hitchcock Hall.  Be sure to bring all forms and questions with you to aid in your conversation.

How do I apply for departmental, university and college scholarships?

Students complete one form to apply for all the scholarships.  Return the original version to the Office of Student Financial Aid in 507 Lincoln Tower.  Return 2 copies to David Donley in 122 Hitchcock Hall.  This form makes you eligible for any scholarships through the university, college and department.

Each year the deadline is March 1st.  If you are a transfer student entering the university after this deadline, you can still complete the application at any time during the school year to be considered for DEPARTMENT scholarships – turn in the application directly to Mary.

Can I complete the FAFSA online and what is the school code?

Yes, you can at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and the OSU school code is 003090

If I know I won’t receive aid by filling out the FAFSA can I just not complete it?

Everyone should always complete the FAFSA.  In many cases, you have to have completed the FAFSA to qualify for other university scholarships, regardless of what the FAFSA outcome is.

Graduation

Why do I have to submit an Application for Graduation and when is it due?

Graduation applications allow us to make sure you’ve met all of the requirements so that you avoid any unpleasant surprises during your last quarter, when it’s too late to fix the problem. Applications are due three quarters prior to the quarter you planning on graduating.

If I want to change my quarter of graduation, what should I do?

If you would like to change the quarter that you are graduating, you must complete and submit a NEW graduation application to the undergraduate advisor.

I have to complete Unit Ops this summer, but have completed all other requirements.  Can I walk in the spring graduation?  When will I receive my diploma?

No – you may not walk in the spring graduation if your quarter of graduation is summer.  You will not receive your diploma until September.

Can I enroll in classes at another institution during my last quarter at OSU?

You may enroll in classes at another institution but a final transcript must be received by the Wednesday of finals week indicating a “C-” or better in all courses taken in order to graduate for that specific quarter. If the transcript is not received in time to confirm graduation you may participate in the ceremony but you will not receive your diploma. If the transcript is received by the 2nd Friday of the next quarter, your diploma will be granted. If it does not arrive by then, your graduation will be moved to the following quarter pending the receipt of transcript.

What is the Graduation with Honors in Engineering program?  How is it different than having Honors status?

How do I get my graduation gown, mortar board and tassel?

To get your graduation items, visit the Ohio State Bookstores, (614) 292-2991.

Can I attend graduation without going to the rehearsal the Friday before?

Yes. You are not required to attend rehearsal, however it is strongly suggested that you attend so that you may be more aware of the procedures on Commencement day.

How many of my friends and family members are allowed to attend commencement?

At this time, there is no limit on the number of friends and family members that attend your graduation ceremony.

Do my friends and family need tickets to commencement?

Tickets are not required to attend the Commencement Ceremonies.

Technical Electives & Research

Do I have to complete one of the technical elective options in order to graduate?

No!  There are two general approaches you can take when planning your technical electives: 1) Take a variety of courses on diverse topics so that you broaden your education; 2) Take a series of courses focused on a specific topic (e.g., biomolecular, polymer, environmental) so that you get an in-depth exposure to one particular area. It’s entirely up to you to decide which approach you wish to take. Currently, most students follow the first approach and do not complete any of the options. On the other hand, for students who have strong interests in one area, or know what they’ll be working on in an industrial position after graduation, or plan to pursue graduate research in a specific area, then completing one of the options may be a good way to go.

Who can I talk to about technical elective content and various content areas?

Students are best served talking to faculty to discover the most about different subject areas within chemical and biomolecular engineering.  Take a look at the Faculty Advising Groups handout and also the Department’s website to see which professors specialize in which areas.

I want to take a course for technical elective credit that isn’t on the list.  Can I do this?

To petition for a non-listed course to count for a technical elective, you must complete the written request form, attach the most current syllabus (to get one, contact the previous instructor of the course) and submit the request to the undergraduate advisor.  It will be the determination of the curriculum committee to see if the course meets the criteria: technical in nature and not something already offered.

Are there any courses that have been petitioned in the past and denied?

Yes, quite a few – so it’s important to never take a course without first getting it approved. For example, no course offered from Fisher College of Business can count as a technical elective course for Chemical Engineering.  The department completed an audit of their course requirements and found none to be sufficiently technical in nature. Courses offered from the ME Department for the FE Exam review and student project teams have not in the past been counted as part of a technical elective plan.

Can I double-count my technical elective courses on a minor?

You can use up to 10 hours of our course credit to count for your degree and a minor from another department.  That is OUR rule.  Be sure to meet with the department in which you are pursuing the minor to complete any paperwork and double check what THEIR rules are.

I want to complete Undergraduate Research as part of my technical elective plan.  What are the rules and how do I get started and registered for the course?

Students can complete 6 hours of 693 research credit (non-thesis) or 9 hours of honors research (thesis) to count towards their technical electives.  Students can take more hours of research if they like, but it will not count towards any graduation requirements. Click here for more information on student projects available.

Transferring

I am going to transfer to transfer to Ohio State but missed the March 1st scholarship deadline. What can I do?

You can still complete the application at any time during the school year to be considered for DEPARTMENT scholarships – turn in the application directly to Mary.

I am considering transferring to Ohio State.  How can I see which of the courses that I took will transfer directly to Ohio State?

The Course Applicability System (CAS) provides information on courses, course equivalencies, and program requirements at a CAS institution (most are in Ohio, some in Michigan and West Virginia) to anyone who accesses a CAS website. CAS provides information on how their specific coursework will transfer and apply towards a degree at a CAS institution. You can access all of the website functions by using the “Guest Log In” option.

If you have completed Chemical Engineering coursework, you should contact Dr. Rathman and submit a syllabus including course layout, topics covered and the textbook used.
