Transferring from another Institution

WELCOME!
All questions about the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering curriculum and transfer procedures can be directed to the undergraduate advisor for Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering.  Feel free to schedule an appointment or chat via email about questions that you may have about transferring, the curriculum, etc... before and after you complete your application to Ohio State.

Students interested in transferring to our department from outside Ohio State need first be accepted at the University.  To apply, please visit the OSU admissions office online. [opens in new window]

Please note that being admitted to the University does not guarantee admission to the program.  Also, our department is not at all connected with University admissions procedures.

Already admitted?  CONGRATULATIONS!! Check your "To Do List" by clicking here.

If you have taken courses at your current institution in Chemical Engineering, you should contact Dr. Jim Rathman to set up an appointment to talk about how your coursework could or will transfer to our department.  He and the undergraduate advisor can help you determine where you would start in our program.

If you want to know how courses will transfer to OSU before you apply, you may use the CAS system online.  If you cannot find the course online, contact the transfer credit coordinator in that specific department.  For example, if you are currently taking calculus at your institution and would like to know if that course would transfer to OSU and what it will count for, first open the CAS online system and use the Course Equivalency Guides to see if you can find your course and what it would transfer as to Ohio State.

If you cannot find the course online, contact the Math counseling office.  They will ask that your bring in, fax or mail your course syllabi (should include schedule of lectures and homework, book information, chapters covered, description, etc...).  Once they have that information, they can tell you what your course will count as.  Math and Chemistry (and previous Chem E work if you have it) are the two most important subjects to determining where you fit into our program.

Transferring from a Regional Campus

Students transferring from a branch campus to the Columbus campus to pursue Chemical Engineering should complete the following steps:

1. Complete 45 hours of Ohio State coursework with a GPA of 2.00 or better at the branch campus.

NOTE: These courses should include Calculus (Math 151, 152, 153) and General Chemistry (121, 122 and 123).  If your campus offers Engineering 185, 186 or 187 you should attempt to complete those courses as well.  Also, completing any of the Physics sequence (131, 132 or 133) is helpful, as is English 110.

2. Schedule an appointment with your advisor at the branch campus.
3. Request and complete a Inter-University Transfer form (IUT).
4. Drop your IUT off at the Engineering college office – 122 Hitchcock Hall.
5. Meet with Jim Rathman or the undergraduate advisor to talk about scheduling the courses that you need to get started at the Columbus campus.

Most students from other branches transfer into the College of Engineering as an undecided student. To be in the Chemical Engineering major, a student must fill out an application and have successfully completed the following courses:

• Math 151, 152, 153
• Chemistry 121, 122, 123
• Secondary point-hour ratio (SPHR) of 2.00 or higher (SPHR is the grade point average for Math and Chemistry courses listed above.)

Students are admitted into the Chemical Engineering major in the fall and winter quarters of each academic year.

Changing Your OSU Major to Pre Chemical Engineering or Chemical Engineering

Students interested in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering currently pursuing another major should meet with the undergraduate advisor to change their major officially or to find out more information about scheduling appropriate courses.  It is easiest to schedule an appointment via email at cbe-ugrad@chbmeng.ohio-state.edu but feel free to drop by Koffolt 314A if you are in the area (140 W.19th Ave.)
